On the US PGA Tour, the Canadian Open was won by America's Scott Piercy in a single-shot victory over compatriots William McGirt and Robert Garrigus. Piercy began the final round two strokes behind Garrigus, the overnight leader. However, the American picked up several birdies on the front nine to overtake Garrigus and lead the tournament at the turn.
As the final round came to a close in Ontario, Piercy watched attentively from the clubhouse as Garrigus and McGirt completed the last few holes of the course at the Hamilton Country Club. With a final round score of 67, Piercy managed to retain his one-shot lead over his closest rivals who took themselves out of contention on the final hole.
Piercy will now take part in next week's Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio – one of the events which make up the World Golf Championships series. Golf fans can look forward to many more victories from this talented player.
In Europe, the Austrian Open was won by local favourite Bernd Wiesberger in a three-stroke victory over Ireland's Shane Lowry and the Frenchman Thomas Levet. Having started the final round four strokes off the lead, the young Austrian made quick work of the course as the warm late summer weather provided a pleasant environment for an exciting final round of golf.
As overnight leader Thorbjorn Olesen of Denamrk saw his game deteriorate in the final round, Wiesberger summoned his skill and energy to finish with an overall score of 269 or 19-under for the tournament. Olesen finished fifth overall after a final round score of 74.
For Wiesberger, who is the second Austrian to win the title after Markus Brier's victory in 2006, Sunday's win at the Austrian Open marks his second win on the European Tour, having won in Asia earlier in the season.
