On the US PGA Tour, local favourite Hunter Mahan carded a one-stroke victory at the Houston Open to become the first multiple-winner of the 2012 season.
As the final round unfolded in Humble, Texas, Mahan set his sights on the trophy. With a high level of focus, the American managed to edge out South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen who had taken the lead in the third round. Oosthuizen carded two birdies on the front nine which gave Mahan the opportunity he needed to surge ahead, playing each shot carefully in the knowledge that his lead was small enough to be reversed.
Mahan finished the tournament off with a solid performance at the eighteenth hole, making par to end the tournament one stroke ahead of Sweden's Carl Pettersson. Oosthuizen took third place. For Mahan, this win marks his fifth victory on the tour and propels him to number 4 on the world rankings, the highest ranking currently held by an American golfer.
In Europe, Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen treated golf fans to a display of his talent on the course as he recorded his first-ever victory at the Sicilian Open.
Sunday's final round saw Olesen struggling with a bogey at the first hole, but this rocky start was to be short-lived as the young champion steadied himself and found his rhythm on the front nine. Proving himself to be an all-weather player, Olesen set about closing the gap between himself and Britain's Chris Wood, who finished one stroke behind the Dane in second place. Third place went to fellow-Dane Soren Kjeldsen and Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium.
For Olesen, who expressed his excitement and a little surprise at having clinched his first-ever title, Sunday's win at Venduro Golf Club means the beginning of a promising professional career. At 22, the young champion will have many future opportunities to remind golf fans of his talent and skill as his game continues to flourish.
