On the US PGA Tour, the final event of the season was won by American Robert Garrigus. The Children’s Network Classic, an event held at Disney World, ended this season on a jovial note, while Garrigus carded the first victory of his career. The final day was touch and go for the American, who had compatriot and overnight leader Roland Thatcher hot on his trail on the front nine. Despite the enormous pressure, Garrigus mustered his finest form to shoot an eight under par 64, finishing three strokes ahead of Thatcher and ensuring his place on the tour next season.
In Singapore, Australia’s Adam Scott overcame a tough course and heavy competition to lift the trophy at the Singapore open. Held at the Sentosa Golf Club, the six million dollar trophy is highly coveted in professional golf circles. In play that was delayed to early Monday due to bad weather conditions, the Australian shot a final round of 68 to beat Denmark’s Anders Hansen by three strokes. This is Scott’s third win at the Singapore Open, having won previously in 2005 and 2006.
In women’s golf, In-Kyung Kim of South Korea won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, which took place in Mexico. In a three stroke victory over Suzann Pettersen of Norway which saw the latter go without a single win this season, Kim demonstrated her precision and resolve on the course, firing off a succession of accurate shots and only failing to make par on one occasion. This is the South Korean’s third win on the LPGA, roughly a year after having won the State Farm Classic in 2009. Kim announced she would be donating the $1.1 million prize money to the Lorena Ochoa Foundation which provides assistance to the less fortunate.
