World Golf News - 15 March 2011

The US PGA Tour was once again in the spotlight this week, with the World Golf Championship drawing live crowds and a large television audience. After four rounds of action-packed golf, victory at the WGC went to the American Nick Watney with compatriot Dustin Johnson following in second place. The course at Doral was in pristine condition, with cool but fine weather prevailing in a weekend that saw Watney make several crucial birdies while keeping the bogeys at bay to card four days of consistently low scoring that ultimately won him the trophy. In exciting news for Tiger Woods fans, the former world number one carded his first top ten finishes in almost a year, matching the best round of the day on Sunday. Woods’ remarkable performance could mean that a comeback is on the cards, with the US Masters just several weeks away.

The European tour is in recess this week, with players and fans on the Continent awaiting the Sicilian Open this weekend in Italy.

On the seniors’ tour, the Toshiba Classic was won by Zimbabwean veteran golfer Nick Price. On the fourth day of an exciting championship held at the Newport Beach Country Club, Price showed spectators and television fans alike that he still has the winning edge. From the first round, where he matched the tournament record for lowest score with an 11 under par 60, to a victorious final round in which competitor Mark Wiebe made a daring but unsuccessful charge for victory Price was in top form as he lifted the trophy on Sunday. For his part, Wiebe thrilled fans nearly forcing a playoff which was only averted when he missed a birdie at the eighteenth, conceding victory to an elated Price.
