On Sunday Scotland's Richie Ramsay won the most important title of his career thus far when he was victorious at the European Masters. As this talented player comes into his own on the European Tour, this week's player profile introduces fans to one of Scotland's finest golfing talents.
Ramsay was born in 1983 in Aberdeen, Scotland. His early years saw him taking an interest in the game of golf which he developed further during his high school years and his time at Stirling University. After a successful amateur career which included victories at the 2004 Scottish Amateur Open and the 2006 US Amateur – the first Briton to do so in almost 50 years – Ramsay turned professional in 2007.
After his professional debut on the second-tier Challenge Tour during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Ramsay saw his game improve as he weathered the competition and technical challenges of golf at the professional level.
Playing consistently, Ramsay won his first title at the 2008 Vodafone Challenge, followed by a win at the Golf Open Grand Toulouse in the same season. These victories allowed Ramsay to finish the 2008 season in the top ten on the Challenge Tour, and in 2009 he began to compete on the European Tour.
A year after his European Tour debut, Ramsay won his first title at the 2010 South African Open in a playoff against India's Shiv Kapur. In 2011 the Scotsman focused on his game as the season failed to yield a victory but provided ample opportunities for Ramsay to raise his form on the course to meet the exacting standards of the European Tour.
On Sunday, Ramsay carded an impressive four-stroke victory at the European Masters, beating a host of players to lift the trophy at his most important tournament yet. Golf fans may expect many more impressive performances from this talented player as he comes into his own on the European Tour.
