On Sunday Nicolas Colsaerts won his second European Tour title when he was victorious at the World Match Play Championship. This week’s player profile highlights the recent career milestones of this talented golfer as he establishes himself as a tournament winner in Europe.
29-year-old Colsaerts was born in 1982 in Shaerbeek, Belgium. Having developed his game through tireless practice as a teenager, Colsaerts made an early professional debut at the age of 18, joining the second-tier Challenge Tour and progressing to the European Tour where he currently enjoys the title of two-time champion.
Following a period of adjustment to the rigours of the European Tour, Colsaerts emerged as a serious contender during the 2010 season, having weathered the competition and difficulty of playing golf at the highest level. Following a victory at the 2011 China Open, Colsaerts has been a favourite on the European Tour and has enjoyed consistently good results in the 2011 season and the first half of 2012, culminating in his victory at the World Match Play Championship on Sunday.
Sunday’s final round saw Colsaerts pitted against Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, one of the most skilled golfers on the international circuit. Seemingly unfazed by his competitor, the young Belgian beat McDowell 1 up on the last day of play and was ahead of the pace throughout the competition. Despite a moment of uncertainty on the 17th when it seemed possible for McDowell to turn the tables on Colsaerts, the Belgian reversed his fortunes at the final hole to lift the trophy.
Nicolas Colsaerts now finds himself in the company of today’s golfing greats, having beaten McDowell at the prestigious World Match Play Championship. As the young player continues to blossom, golf fans should be treated to many more displays of skill from this talented player.
