George McNeill won his second PGA Tour title on Sunday at the Puerto Rico Open. This week's player profile highlights the recent career successes of this talented golfer.
Born in 1975 in Naples, Florida, McNeill was fortunate to grow up in one of the world's most popular golfing regions. Having taken to the game from a young age, he continued to hone his skills during his high school and college years.
McNeill attended Florida State University where his amateur golf career began with great success. He was an All-American in 1997 and 1998, and following his graduation from college he began the challenging process of launching his professional career.
Following a successful college golf career, McNeill's foray into the professional golf circuit was muted by comparison. As he put the finishing touches on his golf game, the young professional played on the Nationwide Tour and Golden Bear Tour before taking a break from professional golf in 2005. Following his marriage to Lynn Turner, McNeill returned to the game in 2006 when he qualified for the U.S. Open.
McNeill's return to professional golf saw him emerge as a well-rounded and highly skilled player. Not one to make heavy weather of a challenge, the young player's cool head served him well as he made his way through two Nationwide Tour events, eventually winning the 2006 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. With an about-turn in his professional fortunes underway, McNeill made his PGA Tour debut in 2007.
After a challenging start to the 2007 season which saw him miss the points cut at the FedEx Cup, McNeill won his first professional championship at the Frys.com Open later in the season. His victory at the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday secured his place at the highest level of professional golf, with the bulk of his career still ahead of him.
