Player Profile - Caroline Hedwall
This week’s player profile introduces golf fans to a highly talented young player and winner of the 2011 UNIQA Ladies Golf Open, Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall.
Born in 1989 in the town of Täby, near Stockholm, Hedwall may have awakened her talent for golf as she walked the scenic winding streets for which the town is well-known. She first began playing golf at the age of eight, and soon her parents Yvonne and Claes realised the extent of their daughter’s talent for the game.
As Hedwall grew older, she increased her focus on golf and took advantage of the fine weather that persists during Sweden’s summer months to hone her skills. By the time she was in high school, the young golfer was already contemplating a career in golf. By the time Hedwall was 19 years old, her hard work and passion for golf had begun to yield results. After winning the European Amateur Championship in 2007, she went on to win the European Team Championship and the World Amateur Championship the following year. Another victory at the European Amateur in 2009 and at the European Team Championship in 2010 served to confirm both Hedwall’s talent and her ability to win consistently. A career in professional golf was now within her reach.
While completing her studies at Oklahoma State University, Hedwall played extensively on the US college golf circuit, gaining vital tournament experience while working with renowned coaches who helped the young golfer to round off all aspects of her game. Hedwall’s collegiate golf victories were impressive: she won the 2010 NCAA Individual Champion, Player of the Year, First Team All-American, Big 12 Player of the Year, and Golfstat Cup – all in the same season.
When the young Swede made her rookie debut on the Ladies European Tour this year, she set out to continue her record of victories. On Sunday, she proved her intentions to fans when she seized the UNIQA Ladies Open in a dynamite final round performance.
