In the United States, the American Tommy Gainey was victorious at the McGladrey Classic, beating compatriots David Toms and Jim Furyk who finished second and third respectively.
The final round was a decisive one for Gainey, who carded a final round score of 60 and set a course record in the process. The back nine saw Gainey scoring exceptionally well, with a string of seven 3's in a row placing the 37-year-old firmly in the lead as he awaited a challenge from his nearest rivals in the comfort of the clubhouse.
Although David Toms finished the final round with a score of 63, and Furyk with a score of 69, neither player was able to contend successfully for the trophy which was lifted by an elated Gainey as he celebrated his first-ever victory on the US PGA Tour. The talented American now joins the winners' circle as the fourth player to win this season by erasing a final round deficit of seven strokes.
On the European Tour, which travelled to Australia last week, the Perth International was won by America's Bo Van Pelt in his first victory of the 2012 season.
Carding a 16-under-par 272 for the tournament, Van Pelt kept his nerve as he successfully weathered a challenge from compatriot Jason Dufner on the back nine. However, it was Van Pelt who lifted the trophy when play ended on Sunday. Dufner, who is a good friend of Van Pelt's, congratulated his compatriot on a well-deserved win.
The victory was bittersweet for Van Pelt, who lost his friend and caddy Scot Steele to a heart attack on Friday. Dedicating his win to Steele, Van Pelt remembered his caddy's hard work and friendly disposition as he bid a final farewell to the 55-year-old caddy who died after collapsing in the car park of a golf club in North Carolina.
