On the US PGA Tour, Spain's Sergio Garcia returned to winning form to win the Wyndham Championship which was delayed until Monday due to rainy weather.
As heavy rains on Sunday interrupted Garcia's lead of the tournament, the Spaniard returned on Monday in excellent form and carded a final round score of 66 to bring him 18-under-par for the tournament. Garcia's final round began eventfully, with an early bogey briefly putting the Spaniard's victory at risk.
However, Garcia upped his game and cared four birdies on the front nine to regain his lead, and further birdies at the 13th, 15th and 16th holes placed him securely at the top of the leader board. South Africa's Tim Clark put in an excellent performance, coming in second after Garcia with a deficit of two strokes, while the American Bud Cauley was in third place.
Garcia had been suffering from a winning drought in North America since his victory four years ago at the 2008 Players Championship. Since winning two events on the European Tour last October, the Spaniard has been raising his game consistently and his current fifth-place position on the world golf rankings will ensure him a place on the European Ryder Cup team this September.
On the LPGA Tour, Mika Miyazato was victorious at the Safeway Classic on Sunday, finishing two strokes ahead of Brittany Lincicome of the United States and South Korea's Inbee Park.
Miyazato displayed a focus and level of skill that far exceeded her 22 years on the course at Pumpkin Ridge as she extended her first round lead to capture her first-ever LPGA title on Sunday with a final score of 203, or 13-under-par. As Miyazato comes into her own on the LPGA Tour, fans can expect many more displays of golfing excellence from this talented young player.
