Golf Results - 21 December 2012

As the US PGA Tour continued its recess this week, players headed to Thailand and South Africa respectively for the Johor Open which was won by Spain's Sergio Garcia and the Alfred Dunhill Championship which saw another victory for local favourite Charl Schwartzel.

In Thailand, rainy weather threatened the Johor Open's progress throughout the week, reducing the tournament to 54 holes and stopping play briefly during the final round. However, the rain did little to dampen Sergio Garcia's sunny disposition as the Spaniard carded an 11-unde-par 61 to clinch the title on Sunday. The American Jonathan Moore was in second place, three strokes behind Garcia.

As a break in the weather allowed play to continue during the final round, the Spaniard made easy work of the golf course at Horizon Hills. Completing the final round without dropping a single shot, Garcia carded seven birdies on his path to victory.

Local favourite Thaworn Wiratchant, who finished fifth, was also victorious on Sunday as he was awarded the Asia Tour's Order of Merit. The 46-year-old has inspired mature golfers around the world with his superb performance, despite being older than many other champions in international and Asian golf.

In South Africa, the Alfred Dunhill Championship was won by Charl Schwartzel – the second win in as many weeks for the local favourite.

In a fantastic display of golfing talent, Schwartzel wowed local fans as he carded a whopping 12-stroke victory over Sweden's Kristoffer Broberg. The South African won the Thailand Golf Championships by a margin of 11 strokes just a week earlier.

Schwartzel, whose playing style allows for the slow and steady accumulation of birdies, began the final round with a 10 stroke lead. After a round of precision golf on Sunday, the South African had improved his lead by an additional two strokes, sending a clear message to his fans and competitors as the 2013 season begins.
