On the European Tour, the Italian Open was won by Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in a two-shot victory over the South African Garth Mulroy.
Sunday's final round saw the Spaniard unseat Mulroy, who had led the tournament on day three, in a golfing duel that lasted until the seventeenth hole. The Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts had briefly lead the final round on the front nine but when his game failed him the battle for the trophy resumed between Castano and Mulroy, with both players performing extremely well in an action-packed round of golf.
Overnight leader Mulroy enjoyed a two stroke lead at the beginning of the final round, only to be unseated by his Spanish rival with an impressive run of four birdies on the front nine. However, the South African weathered the storm and returned with three birdies of his own to take a one-shot lead on the 13th hole.
The two then battled it out until the seventeenth, where Mulroy's suffered a slip of concentration and carded a bogey against Castano's par. A birdie at the final hole was sufficient to give Castano-Fernandez a win at the Italian Open, his sixth career victory on the European Tour.
The US PGA Tour was in recess last week as players prepare for the Coca-Cola Tour Championship next week, to be played at East Lake Golf Club.
In Women's golf, Shin Jiyai of South Korea was victorious at the Women's Open Championship in Liverpool. Shrugging off terrible weather, which forced players to complete the tournament in an epic 36-hole final round, Jiyai treated golf fans to a show of force as she finished in first place by the largest winning margin in the history of the Women's Open. Second place went to compatriot Park Inbee whose performance, although excellent, was not sufficient to challenge Jiyai as she claimed her second career win.
