Swedish golf has been on the rise for several decades, with the Scandinavian country having hosted the European Tour’s Nordea Masters this season.
While many visitors to Sweden may not have the opportunity to play the course at PGA Sweden National, there are a number of world-class public courses throughout the country which welcome visitors from around the world each year – here are four of Sweden’s best golf courses that you could play on your next trip to Northern Europe.
Falsterbo Golf Club
Since opening to the public more than a century ago, Falsterbo Golf Club has been surprising visiting golfers with its magnificent scenery and challenging links layout since 1909. The course is 30 minutes from Copenhagen, located in a nature reserve on the Falsterbo peninsula. 360 degree sea views await golfers at this course, which may be Sweden’s best-kept golfing secret.
Ullna Golf Course – Roslagsvagen
This lakeside course makes the most of the surrounding landscape, with many holes being set between two adjoining lakes. Ullna Golf Course recently underwent a full redesign by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, and has been open to the public in its new form since 2013. Golfers will enjoy this course in summer, when the water features and light breezes offer a respite from the hot weather.
Barsèbäck
Lush fairways, generous bunkering, and a coastal feel come together at Barsèbäck Golf & Country Club, which has hosted 13 European Tour events and has won praise from some of the world’s top golfers. The course forms part of the Barsèbäck Resort, which gives golfers the opportunity to book their accommodation and tee times in one easy process.
Halmstad Golf Club
Recently voted the number one course in Sweden, Halmstad offers visitors the choice of playing the North or South course. Both courses feature a parkland layout, with the Swedish climate producing lush greenery and dense rough which should be avoided at all costs. The North and South courses differ in their layout, providing great variety or offering golfers the option of playing a 36-hole monster round.
